Our Daily Bread (ODB) is a volunteer-based non-profit 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serving the working poor in the Fairfax County VA area since 1984. Our core programs – Food, Financial Assistance, Financial Literacy , and Seasonal (Back-to-School and Holidays) – address the short-term needs that often accompany job loss or financial crisis, while also educating our clients so they achieve financial stability. Our Daily Bread provides a safety net - needs often unmet by other organizations. ODB empowers our community to help our neighbors in need achieve financial stability. We draw on volunteers from local faith-based groups, community and civic organizations, local businesses, schools and universities.
Affluent Fairfax County has a high cost of living that dramatically impacts the working poor. More than 42,000 county school children (24%) qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, a key indicator of poverty. Our typical client is a single parent who works two jobs, supports two children and earns $18,000/year . These are families who are struggling to live paycheck to paycheck, often working several jobs at minimum wage. With a majority of a family’s income going to housing, there is little financial cushion for a crisis. A medical emergency or car trouble can quickly turn a self-sufficient family into one in need. More than half of the clients we serve are children.
