Each month, we host a $5,000 merchandise giveaway on our Facebook page. DollarDays has also been donating 5 percent of every purchase to charities and nonprofits since last year. Why do we do this? It’s simple — we care about helping our communities. Paying it forward isn’t only a fundamental piece of our business identity, it’s who we are.

Our March Facebook giveaway will be for shelters. Any type of shelter is eligible for the $5,000 prize in merchandise. Those that put their all into caring for the men, women, children and pets who are struggling deserve a helping hand. But that’s not all we’re doing — this month, we will be donating 10 percent of all purchases. Doubling the percent of donations allows us to help those in need twice as much.

Three cheers for the people and organizations behind our nation’s homeless shelters. Their dedication is a huge commitment to a portion of our population that many people would prefer to ignore.

DollarDays is sensitive to the needs of the shelters and the homeless. Each winter, DollarDays donates $15,000 worth of socks, blankets and warm winter clothing to shelters around the country in an effort to help lessen the burden on the shelters.

Shelters provide the homeless with a lot more than just a place to sleep for the night. From the bare necessities to items needed to get back on their feet, shelters have the tremendous responsibility of caring for people during their most difficult times.

Here are a few of the many ways that homeless shelters help the less fortunate:

1. Wholesale pricing saves you money

Small businesses, including retail stores and online sellers, as well as nonprofits love our wholesale prices. In fact, we even have some stay-at-home moms who order in bulk from DollarDays and resell products on eBay, Amazon and Etsy in their spare time! Low prices make it easy and affordable for store owners to move inventory at margins that they can take to the bank. Nonprofits find they can make the most of their mission and outreach budget with our wholesale and closeout prices — and watching for our terrific sales to be delivered to their inbox! Daily flash sales and clearance items are full of additional savings.

On this day of service, we are reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful words: "The most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Keenan & Associates, the largest independent insurance brokerage firm in California, recognizes the importance of giving back to the community. During last fall’s inaugural Impact Day, the company’s 700 employees gathered to fill 1,700 backpacks with supplies and assemble 4,200 arts and crafts kits for organizations.

The Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino, Los Angeles Team Mentoring and the Riverside Police Officer Association were among the recipients of the company-wide community service. The event, which took place over three days, was requested by employees.
