4 innovative fundraising ideas that work

Are you in a rut with your fundraising events? Parents, teachers and communities who come together to raise money for schools often have one thing in common — they rely on the same ideas year after year. Break out of the usual bake sale and car wash cycle and try something new!

Here’s how to revive trite fundraisers this school year:

1. Just add music

Everyone loves music! Bring kids into the mix and it results in an irresistible fundraiser. The summer weather gives you the perfect (and free!) venue to hold concerts at a local park. Have a musically inclined volunteer teach the kids a couple of songs to sing. Charge guests for a spot to view the show. Sell snacks and drinks to make extra money, too. Let parents and families enjoy the moment by recording the concert for them, which you can burn to DVD to sell.

2. Remove the stress of back-to-school shopping

Parents are busy and back-to-school shopping can be a stressful experience for both the parents and kids. Work with teachers to gather a list of the school supplies students will need for the upcoming year. Then purchase the items in bulk to pay a fraction of what you would spend at retail stores. At DollarDays, we will donate 5 percent of your order back to your school! Then organize the supplies by grade level, allowing parents to get their school supply shopping done within minutes.

3. Host a game night

Tap into children’s competitive spirit and host a game night at your school. Families can lend board games that you can use to create different game stations. Charge an entry fee and a fee for each station. Use tables to create a makeshift concession stand to raise even more funds.

4. Create a pet contest

People love their pets (almost) as much as they love their children. Hold a pet contest and charge participants a fee to enter. Award prizes for best dressed, best trick and other categories. Everyone will have an opportunity to show off their pets and, as an added bonus, you’ll get to spend time with adorable animals!
