6 Ways to Give Back this Easter

By: Maria Werner-- 2016-03-15 5:30 am --

While Christmas and Thanksgiving are often thought of as the charitable holidays, Easter Sunday also provides the opportunity to give back to your community. On Easter Sunday, there are a lot of children and families in need who could benefit from the kindhearted help of others. By donating your time, you can lift the spirits of those in your community and bring happiness to those less fortunate. Here are some charities that are in need of volunteers and donations this Easter.

  1. Rescue Mission: Easter Sunday is always a big day at Rescue Missions. With 564,708 people going homeless every night, having Easter dinner at a local Mission not only nourishes the body, but also provides people with some much-needed companionship.
  2. Food banks: With millions of Americans living in food-insecure situations, many will be unable to provide an adequate Easter dinner to their families. You can help to reduce the burden by volunteering your time at a local food bank or donating bulk food items to homeless shelters and food banks in your town.
  3. Running for a cause: Easter is a popular day for races, with countless Americans gearing up to run for a cause that matters. The Marillac 2016 Easter Egg 5k in Overland Park, KS, uses the money they raise to provide behavioral health services to children. In Greenwood, IN, Fun Races is hosting an Easter race where all proceeds are dispersed among a variety of charities. Research races in your home town, and spend your Easter Sunday promoting health and fitness, while giving back to a cause that matters.
  4. Dog-Gone Easter Egg Hunt: Taking place in Lacey, Washington, the Dog-Gone Easter Egg Hunt donates all of the money raised to charities that benefit animals. Bring your dog and walk them around as they hunt for Easter eggs. Dress your pup up for the occasion to enter them into the Doggie Fashion show. With a variety of other fun dog activities, like flyball, agility, and herding, this event is a great way to let loose this Easter, while supporting a worthwhile cause.
  5. Salvation Army: Every Easter, the Salvation Army hosts a community prayer service, followed by a variety of fun events. Though events vary by region, they often include a community breakfast, Easter egg hunts, parades, games, and more. In addition to volunteers, they need donations of supplies to ensure they have everything needed for their activities.
  6. Easter Seals: The Easter Seals are a nonprofit organization that provide health services to children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. Around Easter, many chapters’ host community breakfasts, Easter egg hunts, and other celebratory events to raise money for their causes. To find your local chapter, click here.
