Giving the Gift of Education: Nonprofits that Provide School Supplies to Children in Need

By: Maria Werner-- 2016-03-01 2:00 pm --

More than 16 million children are living below the poverty line in the U.S. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of 22 percent of all children. When families are living in poverty, it often results in substandard educational resources for kids, which impacts the child’s ability to learn and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Fortunately, a variety of nonprofit organizations are helping to fill the gaps by providing backpacks and school supplies to underprivileged children throughout America.

The Kids in Need Foundation

The Kids in Need Foundation has made it their mission to provide school supplies to children across the U.S. in an effort to minimize the impact of poverty and give children the tools they need to thrive in academia. They rely on donations from the public to make their organization a success. Some rules for donating include:

  • Donating new supplies that are unopened and in their original packaging.
  • Products that are intended for school and education.
  • Products that are appropriate for grades K-12.
  • Products that meet the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) guidelines.

They distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to eligible children throughout the U.S., targeting some of the nation’s most disadvantaged schools in hopes of giving children the advantages they need to excel.

The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has always had a mission to combat poverty, and assisting with education is one of their many projects. When children lack the necessary tools for school they are more likely to fall behind in their coursework, less able to complete homework assignments effectively, and more at risk for dropping out of high school. With the help of donations from the public, the Salvation Army organizes back-to-school events to gather supplies that are distributed to families in need.

A Precious Child
A Precious Child is a Colorado-based organization that fills backpacks with supplies, and delivers them to the most disadvantaged schools in the state. People can sponsor a child for $50 to help that child obtain the necessary supplies to succeed. They also accept donations of bulk supplies, which helps them fill nearly 7,500 backpacks each year.

Volunteers of America’s Operation Backpack
Operation backpack is just as it sounds. Each year, the Volunteers of America collect donated school supplies that they package in backpacks and deliver to thousands of children in need. They particularly target homeless children living in NYC where homelessness is particularly pervasive. One of the most damaging factors for homeless children is their likelihood to fall behind in school. With the right school supplies, children feel empowered and are able to tackle their schoolwork more efficiently.

With so many children living in poverty and homelessness, education among children tends to suffer. School supplies go a long way in equipping children with the tools they need to flourish. Make a difference in a child’s life by donating school supplies to families that need them most.
