How to survive the first day of kindergarten

By: Jessica Urgiles-- 2015-04-24 5:34 pm --

The first day of kindergarten is a huge milestone in every child’s life. Preparing your new kindergartner (and yourself) for the first day of school can be daunting. From ensuring they have all of the necessary school supplies to developing a solid relationship with your child’s teacher, the chaotic nature of the first day of kindergarten is emotional and overwhelming.

There’s a lot of pressure to begin your child’s formative learning years perfectly. Having a game plan for the first day of school will help you relax and focus on what’s important. You only get one first day of kindergarten and you don’t want to remember it as a stressful experience. It should be spent enjoying the moment and creating memories. School Supplies

Most teachers will email parents before the first day of school with a list of the supplies your soon-to-be kindergartner will need. If you know what items are needed ahead of time, you can shop around for the best deals. Usually, you will find that buying items in bulk is the most economical option.

Pencils and crayons are used and lost quickly with little ones. Since they are always needed, purchasing more than you need at the moment isn’t a bad idea. Instead of restocking throughout the year, you can purchase the year’s supply all at once and save money. You will also save time from last-minute trips to the store when your child comes home with a teacher’s note requesting new supplies.

Even if you aren’t provided with a list, certain essentials, such as backpacks, are a given. Learn how to choose the right backpack for your child as one that is too big or heavy can strain muscles and joints. For busy parents, another alternative is to purchase a backpack that’s been pre-filled with school supplies. This saves time, money and removes the guesswork of what school supplies to buy. Our DollarDays primary kit backpacks are only $18 and arrive stuffed with over $100 worth of school supplies, saving you over 80 percent.

Emotional Support

Whether your child attended preschool or not, kindergarten is a whole new world that can be quite scary. Packing one of their favorite items, like a stuffed animal or blanket, in their backpack is comforting. There will likely be tears (from both of you), and having an item from home can ease their transition as they learn to adjust to a new environment.

Even the most fearless kid will be nervous about the first day of school. This deserves to be acknowledged so he/she knows those feelings are normal. Hopefully, bedtime reading is already a part of your daily routine and you can use this time to prepare them for what’s to come. “The Night Before Kindergarten” and The New York Times best-seller “The Kissing Hand” are children’s books that address issues from learning to be independent to separation anxiety to help your little one cope.

As your tiny human takes his/her first steps into society without you, remember that it’s something worth celebrating. They will conquer this much-anticipated day and so will you.
